simply create too 51 (snow or only white)

It's time for another round of fun at Simply Create Too where our Challenge #51 theme is "Snow or Only White".  Lucky for me, I just got the Papertrey Mighty Oak die and decided to let it do most of the work creating an only white card.

Dry embossed the tree into CS.  Also die cut an extra tree trunk and dry embossed it with my Craft Concepts woodgrain embossing folder before adding it to the card.  Added my sympathy sentiment (basically, "our thoughts are with you") on a strip of vellum and voila.

Remember, you can create any kind of project, not just cards!  And we love to see cards by kids too! So have some fun and Simply Create Too!

christmas greetings (CBS)

Lost this challenge (#6 Christmas) from my radar screen somehow, but luckily I saw it again today.  So apologies for the lousy photo.  I had doggie duty and couldn't get to crafting until after the sun went down.  But I'm in before the challenge closes.

I purchased the Clearly Besotted Signature Christmas set after Christmas last year and this was the first time I got around to using it.  I just love the set.

Used CBS Building Blocks with Delicata gold for the square, then stamped the tree over it using Amuse Fern ink.  Die cut the image with a Spellbinders 2011 Heirloom ornament and then stamped some polka dots (another Building Block) on a scrap and die cut just the top portion of the ornament again.  Used decorative edge scissors to create an ornament topper.  I think it worked!
The strip of washi... not sure about that.  But I tried to balance it out with the sentiment in red.

I tapped all the edges in the gold ink pad, but TIP:  the folded edge of the card sinks into the sponge ink pad and soaks up more ink than desired.  Keep that in mind when using this technique, and tilt your card appropriately.  As much as I like the gilded edges effect, that left edge was not what I had in mind.  Looks like it couldn't decide if it wanted to be gilded or distressed.  Ugh.

Fat and happy, that's me.  Fat cuz I ate too much of our Thanksgiving dinner yesterday.  And I might have just snitched the last of the chocolate mousse while writing this post... And happy cuz it went well.  And cuz it's over...

Anyhoo, where's the card, you ask?

Started out as an idea to create a blue star card.  Cuz that's what I got from the Curtain Call inspiration photo.  See 'em on the tree?

Well I knew I wanted to play at a new challenge I discovered from my pal Shirley B., Stamplorations.  I'm diggin' those stamps.  So the challenge calls for stamping and sequins.

Only problem was I got sidetracked by this nifty October Afternoon Holiday Style - great retro feel to this line.  Love the blue tone so decided to go with it.  Made a shaker star-shaped card, trapping sequins between the card and the layer of recycled packaging I stitched on.  Stamping was then limited to the embellies - the candy cane and sentiment up top - both embossed to keep up with the shiny-ness of the project ;)

Also placing this into the Paper Crafts November gallery challenge where it's all about sequins!

OK, so there's a huge flower on the WPlus9 Mood Board #23.  But what do I notice?  Those cool green and white berry sprigs up top.  I truly have a "thing" for circles.  And polka dots.  Well, then it's not a long stretch to bokeh, right?

Looks familiar you say?  Did you see this lovely created by Jennifer M. a couple weeks ago.  I've been dying to give it a try.  So I picked up on the orange and green fabrics at the bottom and I was off and running.  Lots of bokeh.  A multi-layered heart (a cool option to popping items up on dimensional adhesive!).

Love this look.  Hope you likey too.

Here's a one-layer CAS card for ya.  Can you guess where my inspiration came from?

If you caught the black leaves then maybe you thought of the current photo over on the Runway. RIC #48.

My eye caught the wispy branches, pink flowers and the black leaves.  Been lovin' those since Cristina K. produced this lovely.

So the pink flowers morphed to a morning sky, created with distress inks spritzed with perfect pearls water on an acrylic block.  And I chose this vine image from Inkadinkado Delicate Branches to get my black leaves.  And what was going to be a sympathy card turned into a message of hope (the lovely morning sky, ya know?) on a get-well card.

And this was purely a fluke, but ... count the leaves on the vine.  (Can you guess where I'm going with this?)  There are 8.  And what is the cool challenge at CASual Fridays #121?

Have a wonderful weekend.  As I mentioned, we are celebrating Thanksgiving on Sunday (there'll be 12 of us).  The pumpkin soup is done, ham is baked (I've got a good recipe if you're interested), cranberry relish made, sweet potatoes just waiting for the 'mallows, cornbread muffins and banana bread ready... pumpkin pie and stuffing are on the agenda for today.  Sure hope the bird thaws in time...  I just love the way the house smells at this time of year.  Un problemo - anyone wanna come clean my house?!?!?

Time for another Pajama Party over at Waltzingmouse Stamps.  A few items to share with you so I'll just get to it ...

Challenge 1 - Thank you 

Did some splattering with Distress Stain direct to paper, some stamping with grunge stamps and a big ole sentiment.  I'm  joining the fun over at Stampotique with this card too.  Challenge #126 calls for paint splatters.  Yep.

Challenge 2 - A Christmas card

I absolutely love this bloom from the Waltzingmouse Poinsettias stamp set.  Decided to let it do its thing on kraft with half of a Tim Holtz sentiment stamp from the Christmas Memories stamp set heat embossed in black.  Just a peek of Pink Paislee Luxe metallic CS along the side to tie in with the golden bling in the center of the bloom.

Challenge 3 - Tag it!

Claire, hope you're smiling ;)))  That's the mistletoe image from Festive Foliage (and there are now matching dies for this stamp set!) on a kraft tag and wearing a ruffled skirt.

Challenge 4 - Decorate the halls (or presents or tree or both!)

Remember this technique - heat embossing multiple times and then stamping in the still-warm-top-layer?  Made these as tags for presents that can later make their way onto the Christmas tree.  Used some older- but-loved October Afternoon PP along with recycled packing paper on these.

Don't stay up all night, now.  Sweet dreams ya'll...

Got your earplugs in?   I'm tootin' my own horn here today.  I am so incredibly happy to have five cards published in the special edition of Paper Crafts Magazine, Card Creations for Him.  I had a blast making cards for the submission call. But as the deal goes, I can only share one with you here... you really should check out this issue (and it's still paper!!!)  It's tough to make cards for guys, but this issue was created in an interesting way.

They're sharing samples from each of the categories over at the PC blog this week.  Did you see the clever take on "Classic & Refined" from Amy W.?  I have an anniversary and a retirement card in that section of the mag, too.

But I want to share my fave creation with you.   It's actually a 20th anniversary card for DH. (Unfortunately he didn't get it cuz it went to Utah!!!)  Anyhoo, any geocachers out there?

I'm not gonna explain it... I think you "get" it...
May I just say it's a great idea if you really want to make a card personal - whether wedding, anniversary, baby...  Agree? BTW, DH doesn't geocache.  I just love the "idea" behind the coordinates.

Happy new week, folks!  We're celebrating Turkey Day with friends here in Germany on Sunday so the week will be filled with lotsa preparation.  But I'm squeakin' in here with a Papertrey Make it Monday #140 entry.

I'm also hooking up to Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge where the theme is "It's a Mystery." The mystery?  I didn't heat emboss these tags.  So how did I get the herringbone pattern?!?!?  Well, maybe these tags were more magic than mystery, but I used Pink Paislee Artisan Papers for the tag base.  The papers are white but have a pattern embossed onto them which comes to life when you apply a color medium.  In this case, Distress Ink pads swiped side-to-side.  And voila.

This is the very same cancer that takes many young children's lives also. Humans and dogs suffer from the same cancers and I believe when there is a cure for human cancer there will be a cure for canine cancer also. So we must all stick together and not only hope for a cure but bring awareness to these horrible cancers!

Seeing as how Miss Ellie just joined our family recently, it breaks my heart to think about the suffering these doggies and their owners endure.  Happy to participate today.  And there will be blog candy for this hop!

What did I see?  Well, um, stripes.  And more stripes.  And if you take a gander up around her shoulders... some light and airy blooms.  Became this.

Not quite as in-your-face, but I think I captured the essence of the photo.  Anyhoo, I'm also playing at Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge where you are to get inky.  I did.  Where you ask? My flutterby is cut from white crepe paper which I used to mop up some super watered down Dylusions Ink (pink and yellow).  I love the watercolor effect it creates.

Are you blog hopped out yet?  I took a break yesterday to make a card for a few challenges.  A feat for moi, as you know I'm usually getting my card ready as the challenge doors close.  But mostly, this card was about the process.  Shirley B. has been creating beauties with her Gelli plate and I decided to give the monoprinting technique a go using a good ole acrylic block.

This is not for control freaks.  Once you smoosh that paper onto the paint there's no telling what you're going to get.  But I like that.  Although I am a control freak.  Hmmmm.

And you use up your stash of acrylic paint before it dries up.  Fabby, eh?  Anyhoo, I masked the spot for the sentiment, fearing stamping on paint wouldn't work well.  Smooshed the yellows. Stamped with pale sage which I brayered onto parts of a BG stamp.  Stamped the sentiment and then made a stencil with dies to make the arrows. Mixed a clear embossing paste with some purple paint for those.  I think doing that makes the paste a bit runnier, which may or may not be what you want! Ran a purple pigment ink pad around the edges.

This is a one-layer card.  But lotsa depth and interest happening there.  My let's-keep-it-mailable heart likes it.  Hope you do too.

I chose my colors, kinda, from the palette at A Sprinkle of Imagination - it's their first challenge.  I used ochre, a lighter yellow, pale sage and then purple (looking very dark in this photo) mixed into the modelling paste.

Over at CAS on Sunday#21 they're looking for one-layer wonders.  Wonder, nah.  One layer? Check.

And then we have a Thank You Kindly recipe swap going over at Catered Crop where I was lucky to be chosen for the Washi Tape challenge so I get to GD for this challenge.  Thanks Linda!

And... I'm not up this week at Simply Create Too, but Challenge #50 is "Give Thanks" so I'm adding my two cents.

If you were on a desert island (BTW - ain't that an oxymoron?) and could take only one blog with you - which would it be?  Well, it dawned on me after last week's Black Friday, that for me it would be Moxie Fab World.  And if ya take a gander at the number of paper crafters hopping today, it looks like it'd be one heckuva party on that island!

So why is this party so huge?  Well, for me, MFW is (was) kinda like Grand Central Station of Cardmakingland.  And the conductor extraordinaire, Ms. Cath Edvalson.  And there we were, all the little engines, "I think I can, I think I can."  And there she was telling us "you can do it", "here's how to do it", "here's someone who does it well" and then, if you were really lucky, "well done!"

I feel so lucky to have been "moulded" as a cardmaker by hanging out at the Moxie Fab World. And lucky to have met many who share my love of the craft.  I 'm already missing my daily dose of Ms. Cath's Moxie Fab World and I'll be forever grateful for the role it played in my cardmaking.

But mostly, I am looking forward to seeing whose world Ms. Cath is going to brighten next with her talents.

So Cath, the bottle is in the fridge.  The topper is yours.  All you have to do is show up to claim it. We'll share a couple Riesling spritzers out on the screened porch listening to Louis Armstrong's "What a Moxie Fab World" and discussing gallons, quarts and pints.  Hugs to ya, girlfriend.

non-flower flower (PC)

Have you seen the challenges over at Paper Crafts Connection pertaining to the current special issue?

One of them is to create a flower using non-flower stamps.  Well I don't know if this is exactly what they're looking for (maybe that's why it belongs to the species: reject for this exact challenge in the submission call for this issue).  But I think it's mega cool!

Using DD's highlighters I colored a piece of Neenah CS.  Then I stamped a zillion butterflies from Hero Arts Antique Flowers and Butterflies.  Then I die cut a zillion butterflies!  Created my bloom.  Curved a sentiment to make a stem (cool too, no?) One leaf later the card was done.

Hard to photograph, neon is.  But really, oh so cool!

I've made another card for the Curtain Call - Welcome Home challenge.  I just love that blue tone of the weathered wood door in the photo.

Well what started out as Tumbled Glass Distress Ink, a brayer and  glossy cardstock became this...

It kinda took a retro turn.  A Tim Holtz Christmas Memories sentiment heat embossed in red. Some stitching.  Some flat sequins in green and gold - cuz that's how they wouldda done it in the 50s my brain said.  Sometimes I wonder where I come up with this stuff!

I'm going over to the CFC #119 Embossing and the Anything Goes, challenge #200 over at Stampin Royalty too.

How crazy is this thing we call life?

I've shared with you how I felt last Friday when I read Cath's post that Moxie Fab World as we know it is going away.

Now picture this... checking my email before going to bed Friday night, I notice two messages in my Spam folder.  Huh?  One from Paper Crafts & Scrapbooking magazine.

Have a looksee. Oh. My. Goodness.

This card is in the hot-off-the-press Stamp It! Card Challenges. One of over 200 clever ways to use your stamps.  I used the wonderful Folk Art stamp set from Waltzingmouse for this one-layer card.

Crazy, eh? Ellie agrees... What a CRAZY WONDERFUL life!

washi plaid (WPlus9, Catered Crop, SSS)

DD needs a birthday card.  Happy to oblige.  Picked a couple of challenges and here's the result.

Can you say "use up some washi tape?"  Doesn't that sound good? And it's pretty darn easy to create a plaid with washi.  Put your vertical strips down onto a piece of CS, extending them over the edge to hold it down.  Lift every other strip, pulling it back and sticking it temporarily to your work surface.  Lay down a horizontal strip.  Pull the lifted strips back into place and lift the other every-other strips.  Repeat.

TIP:  I used stitching on the banner and sentiment strip cuz adhesive doesn't stick too well to washi.  Plus it fits the mood (as in board).

I'm using the Mood Board from WPlus9 again.  And the recipe to use washi is from Catered Crop Washi's Up?  And since I can, I'm joining the fun at Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge one more time.  Who wouldn't love some free shopping over there?  I've got a wish list a mile long.

Here's a card with inlaid die cuts for you, inspired by Betsy V. at Papertrey's Make it Monday #138.

A slightly different take on the original concept (who me? no...).  I didn't actually die cut the card front.  But you may recall this "sugared" card.  Of course when I made the die cut I saved the negative.  It had all that precious double-sided tape on it!

Enter today's card.  I die cut the "peace" again, this time from some lovely DCWV blue metallic CS. After attaching the negative die cut with the sticky tape to the card front, I glued down the blue piece and then peeled off the tape and burnished glitter into the sticky tape.  This really is such fun to do.  And so much sparkle is wonderful for Christmas cards, don't ya think?

Those sparkling sequins just begged to join the sparkly party.

black friday (WPlus9)

No not the shopping kind.  But the it's-a-sad-day-for-paper-crafters kind of black.  Have you seen this post?

Well a card for the WPlus9 Mood Board #22 was on my to do list and it immediately turned into a card for Cath.  Although I'm still in the denial mode, I'm beginning to get to the thankful-for-what-you-had state.

For me personally, Cath was one of the greatest teachers I've ever had.  Not that she set out to, but she taught by presenting the material and then challenging me to use it.  She led by finding and sharing the best of what's out there in this big, beautiful world. She demanded but honored a job well done. She delivered only high quality (did you ever see a typo in a post?!?) and was always one step ahead of the class.

Ha. Class.  Didn't you feel, when you stopped over there in the morning, like you were socializing with classmates when you read comments from fellow paper crafters?

Man, I'm gonna miss that lady.  But I wouldn't be where I am today in this wonderful adventure without her. And for that I'm extremely grateful.

Cath, you bring (brought... sniff, sniff) me joy.

Remember my pink leaves? In case you were wondering what happened to all the others which I die cut, they became a mini garland in our entryway.

What does this have to do with neon and black?  Not much eh?  Well, remember the neon circles I used for my festive wreath? There were more where those came from so I decided to make a garland.  And trim a tree with it.  However, it didn't work.  TIP:  Garlands work best strung across the full face of a card, not necessarily on narrow areas.  So...

The idea was still a good one.  Get the bokeh feel here?  But a garland without the stitching part! Used the Hero Arts Tiny Ink Spots BG stamped in black, a hand cut triangle for the tree and some washi for the trunk.  The chevrons were made with a Crafter's Workshop Mini Chevron stencil and acrylic paint.  The sentiment from Hero Arts Holiday Sayings was repeatedly embossed.

TIP:  I've mentioned this before but if you have a nice juicy pigment ink, you can heat emboss with clear powder for great results.  You save money (don't have to buy colored powders). And you avoid those stray flecks of embossing powder. (Not that it would really have mattered on this card with the BG and acrylic paint seepage ;)
