sympathetic reject (ABNH, SSS)

Made by a local cardmaker.  Moi.  Intended for submission.  Rejected by a local editor.  Moi.  But that means a new blog post.  Check it out.

I was aiming for masculine and sympathy.  Wanted to use markers in blues and greens for the BG. Colored the stamp, misted, stamped, misted again, stamped again.  Had two panels.  That's where things got difficult.

This was my original design idea.  Nestle sentiment in with butterfly.  Butterfly stamped in gray on vellum.  OK, but the stinker went and warped on me overnight.  Might have been the extra misting for the second generation stamping???  No amount of foam adhesive was going to win the battle. Hmmm.

This was the first stamping, darker colors, see?  But then I got the crazy idea to kiss the solid butterfly stamp and stamp it onto vellum.  Didn't really like the result, but then I saw the inked area on the envelope pattern BG stamp and wondered what that would look like.  So I stamped.  In a sub-optimal place.  (Let's hear it for the advantages of clear stamps over rubber ones!)  And then put the sentiment below.

I do like the butterfly effect with the dark colors, but should probably have angled it to the right and then nestled the sentiment in more to the left.  Yes, we live and we learn.

Eleven challenges and this is my number 10.  Love Fest 2013J is sponsored by Verve Stamps and they want to see their colors (aqua and brown) with either yellow or pink.  Not my go-to colors, but I gave it a try...

Inspired by their banner I was... Faux letterpressed the flourish using Broken China Distress ink on aqua CS.  Stitched around the edges with yellow.  Mis-used my Tim Holtz Bird on a Branch (again) to get a gnarly branch for my butterfly (see it in the banner?).  She was die cut, stamped, painted with pearlescent watercolors and inked around the edges before being mounted on the card over some saved-from-the-bin threads.  I misted a CS scrap before stamping the sentiment in brown.

Two more cards for HYCCT - I can see the finish line now...

The first is a shaped card for HYCCT#1210.  What shape would I pick?  A heart of course.  Which reminded me of the Valentine candies.  Which reminded me of the word "hugs".  Which led to this.

Die cut the card shape, letting the very top of the heart die hang over the edge of the folded CS to preserve the fold.  Die cut the vellum heart and letters in one pass.  Masked and inked the colored stripes.  What better way to attach the vellum than with stitching.  And I opted to do two passes - one with purple twine, one with green for a bit of variety.  A touch of bling and voila.  A "clearly" handmade card.

Second card is for HYCCT#1208, cleverly called "HYCCT".  Use something that starts with an "H", "Y", etc.  Stumped me for awhile.

Took the Skipping Stones Design sketch and went from there.

C = cyan blue for the flower
T = tag, TCM sentiment

Chevron strips - lots of them.  And shipping tags (I use them often to stamp off onto, thinking I will use them later as a tag or part of a card.)  All laying around my workspace.  What to do?

The sketch challenge #149 at Skipping Stones Designs gave me inspiration.

Took a tag which had been stamped with acrylic paint.  Wondered if distress ink would resist it and was silly happy when it did.  Just one more reason to love distress ink!  Thus the tag element for the sketch.

Dies are amazing creatures.  Are you, like me, sometimes amazed by the byproducts?  Like the row of triangles left over when you die cut a chevron strip.  Of course you never know when you might be able to use them.  Thus the stripe element for the sketch.  Offset, cuz it's my newest fave.  Voila!

Most time consuming?  The bling.  Yellow?  Blue?  Small?  Larger?  Square perhaps?  Bingo.

A Passion for Papertrey wants you to create with black, white and a pop of color.  I used the sketch from Skipping Stones #118. 

Used up scraps from this card of mine for the scalloped circle.  Used 2 of my 3 Papertrey sets to stamp the black dot strip and peony.  Heat embossed both.  Stamped the sentiment and adhered circle and flower.  Rounded upper corner.  Done.
